Dentists Helping You Save Your Gums & Teeth
Periodontal disease (gum disease) is a serious dental condition that can cause you to lose your teeth if it is not diagnosed and treated early enough. This disease occurs when the bone that keeps your teeth in place and the gums become infected. Because periodontal disease tends to be painless, many people do not even realize that they have it until it’s too late.
Periodontal / gum disease can cause:
- Deep pockets between the gums and the teeth
- Swollen, sensitive gums
- Loss of gum
- Loose teeth
- Loss of teeth
- Halitosis (bad breath)
Treatment: Scaling & Root Planing
Periodontal disease needs to be treated as soon as possible once it is discovered! At Creve Coeur Family Dental, we can treat your gum disease through the use of scaling and root planing with our team of professional dentists. This is a deep cleaning of the pockets that have formed between your gums and your teeth. The scaling process involves the removal of plaque and calculus from the deep pockets. In the root planning process, we smooth out the roots (or “plane” them) so your gums are able to heal. This dental treatment, which requires several visits, is performed with the use of a local anesthetic. After your scaling and root planning treatment, you should have your teeth cleaned every 3 months.
If you notice that your gums are swollen or bleeding, that your gums are pulling away from your teeth, or that you have bad breath or a bad taste in your mouth, you should have one of our Creve Coeur dentists evaluate you for periodontal disease.
